Flora-to-Table Apprenticeship
Are you a Pittsburgh-area high school student with a passion for conservation and education? Would you like a deeper understanding of the connections between the natural world and the food systems that sustain us? Do you want to learn valuable skills like sustainable beekeeping, honey tasting and environmental education? If so, you should apply to be part of CoNectar’s first class of Flora-to-Table Apprentices! The Spring Term will be January through June of 2025.
Applications will be accepted from November 1st to December 22nd, 2024. Positions are limited. Selected candidates will be notified in January 2025.
Learn Beekeeping
The practice of sustainable beekeeping takes good mentorship to learn seasonal management! Work with Apoidea Apiary to gain firsthand experience in successful honey bee husbandry. If you ever wondered about the mysterious workings inside a beehive, now is your chance to jump into the discipline!
Craft Artisan Honey
Honey bees are the original hard working crafters of honey! You’ll learn the process of honey-making at Apoidea Apiary, from bee to beekeeper. At CoNectar, we’re super fans of all the wonderful flavors honey bees create and we teach appreciation for their work through the discipline of sensory analysis and guided tastings.
Gain Naturalist Skills
Did you know there are over 400 species of bees in Pennsylvania! You’ll learn about the amazing bee diversity in our region and how to guide lessons centered around the art and science of bees identification through iNaturalist.
